Pep Guardiola's Champions League motivation explained as Ederson debunks Erling Haaland 'lie'

Guardiola's motivation for winning the Champions League explained

Ederson believes there is a renewed motivation in the Manchester City squad to win the Champions League this season, as the Blues prepare to resume their European campaign this week.

City travel to RB Leipzig on Wednesday for their last-16 first-leg tie, hoping to reach the quarter-finals for the sixth year in succession. After reaching the final in 2021 and suffering a heartbreaking semi-final exit last year, City are hoping to go one better this season and win their first European Cup.

Previewing the Leipzig trip, goalkeeper Ederson outlined his own personal motivations for getting his hands on a Champions League winner's medal, while admitting that City also want to win the tournament to complete manager Pep Guardiola's reign at the club.

Ederson debunks Haaland 'lies'

Erling Haaland has made a habit of being in the right place at the right time for Manchester City - but teammate Ederson has dismissed the idea that any of his 32 goals have been easy.

Haaland has 32 goals in 31 games, but still has his detractors who think that he is making City worse, or that he has signed for the wrong team. As many of his goals have come from inside the penalty area, he has also been accused in some quarters of 'only' scoring easy goals.

However, goalkeeper Ederson has leapt to Haaland's defence, insisting that the striker's positional awareness and mentality make the so-called 'easy' finishes far more difficult than they look.
