Pep Guardiola provides promising injury update on Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips ahead of World Cup

Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips are in line to be fit for England’s World Cup campaign, Pep Guardiola has revealed.

The Manchester City boss described it as “likely” the duo can shake off respective groin and shoulder injuries in time to make the plan to Qatar.

Gareth Southgate names his final squad on November 10 ahead of facing Iran in their opener in under three weeks.

Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday: “I don't know the intentions for Gareth. He speaks with the players and doctors regularly.

“They know better than me. What I hear in the dressing rooms is that they can be ready.

“I would say yes [they are desperate to return]. You don't play a World Cup every week.”

Erling Haaland will miss City’s Champions League clash with Sevilla due to an ankle knock but Guardiola said he is “hopeful” the striker will return to face Fulham on the weekend.

Neither Phillips nor Walker are in contention with only the midfielder back in light training as things stand.

“We'll see [Phillips’] evolution,” said the manager.

“I know how important the World Cup is but I don't use a player who I don't think is ready. Kyle, I'm impressed how quick his recovery [has been] but still a bit late compared to Kalvin.”
