Pep Guardiola has been handed another Man City priority this month

Manchester City's players might have only just come down to earth after winning the Champions League, but thoughts about defending the historic Treble will already be in the forefront of Pep Guardiola's mind.

The release of City's retained list highlights one issue Guardiola cannot ignore. Captain Ilkay Gundogan was marked as 'released' as his contract expires, although MEN Sport understands the Blues are still in negotiations with the German international. Guardiola will be keen to conclude talks with his skipper promptly given other clubs are in a position to pounce.

Once a resolution is found with the skipper, the future of Bernardo Silva will need to be clarified. During a press conference while on international duty with Portugal, Bernardo was quizzed about his future.

"I don't run away from questions," Bernardo answered honestly via Noticias Ao Minuto. "The truth is that this is not the space to talk about it, but I still don't know my future.

"I'm being honest. I don't know, we'll see in the near future. And even if I did, it wouldn't be space to talk about it. The reality is that I don't know.

"I can only speak for myself. It doesn't affect me, because I've been in this situation for almost three years now! I'm already quite used to it, so I'm focused and it's an immense pride to represent our country."

While Bernardo may not be duly concerned, City will be keen to keep hold of a player who progressed this year. The 28-year-old is no stranger to praise but his ability to play comfortably defensively or offensively is a joy for Guardiola.

Next year, City's campaign will be even more stacked with the FIFA Club World Cup in the diary after the Istanbul triumph. To have a player who can be utilised so effortlessly in a number of positions will be vital.

Bernardo has hinted previously about seeking a fresh challenge and with a couple of years left on his deal and City and Guardiola will need to ensure there is a clarity with the Portugal international this summer, otherwise a new addition will be required.
