Pep Guardiola gives update on Man City pursuit of Marc Cucurella amid transfer request reports

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City intend to strengthen at left-back as they continue to try to sign Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella wants to leave Brighton and it was reported on Friday that he has handed in a transfer request in order to try and push the move through. However, the clubs still remain apart in their valuation of the player and City have lined up alternatives including Stuttgart defender Borna Sosa if Brighton will not budge.

Guardiola was tight-lipped on City's attempts to sign Cucurella but did say that they are looking to sign a player in that area. However, he cited Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Nathan Ake as alternatives to Joao Cancelo in that position if the club cannot land anybody in the remaining weeks of the window.

"He's a Brighton player. I cannot say anything else," said Guardiola. "If it's possible [to strengthen we will] but if not, we stay with the players we have.

"Joao can play there, Josh can play there, Nathan can play there. I never complain about the squad I have since the first season. It is always for the benefit of the club, not for me, and I support the club."

City are aiming to sign a left-back as the final major bit of business in the transfer window, having already brought in Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Kalvin Phillips and Stefan Ortega to improve the squad. They take on Liverpool in the Community Shield tomorrow to kick off their season.
