Pep Guardiola confirms Erling Haaland's time on sidelines after missing Leicester clash

Pep Guardiola has ruled Erling Haaland out of Manchester City's Champions League clash at home to Sevilla in midweek, but hopes to have his top goalscorer back for the Premier League visit of Fulham next Saturday.

Haaland sat out this weekend's trip to Leicester City with a foot injury he picked up in the draw with former club Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, with Kevin De Bruyne's superb free-kick proving enough to beat the Foxes 1-0 and take the champions to the top of the Premier League table.

Summer signing Julian Alvarez started the clash at the King Power Stadium in place of Haaland, and Guardiola has confirmed the extend of the damage the Norwegian has suffered.

"He has ligament damage. He feels better, we have one more week," the City boss told BBC Sport.

"He won't play against Sevilla because we've already qualified and hopefully against Fulham he can help us.

"If not he might play against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup [on November 9]."

On the victory over the Foxes, he added: "When they attacked more it was a game, they decided they could play like we could play and they couldn't adjust.

"It is important not to get frustrated when you have problems to attack because it is so difficult. It was really complicated.

"A lot of credit to Leicester for what they have done but we did not get frustrated.

"When they changed the rhythm we could not change the rhythm. We had to suffer."

Discussing De Bruyne's performance, Guardiola was initially critical of the Belgian, saying: "It's not about the assist that Kevin always has, or the free-kick. I know he has these qualities, the last few games it was not him.

"He needs his dynamic, when he can move in different pockets. What can I say about Kevin? Everyone knows him."

Leicester boss Rodgers was left frustrated at being kept at an arm's length by City, but tried to find the positives.

"The players carried out the gameplan as well as we could have asked them to. You have to still be in the game with 20 minutes to go. Defensively we were very, very good but we lacked belief at times and that let us down," Rodgers told BT Sport.

"We had good chances in the game and we were unfortunate not to nick something. You have to concede that you are playing arguably the best team in the world, they can play through you and around you.

"There are lots of elements we can be better in. But the spirit of the team and the mentality was we kept fighting."
