Pep Guardiola and Brendan Rogers on 'quality' Sunderland new boy Patrick Roberts

Patrick Roberts has penned a six-month contract with Sunderland becoming their third signing of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old playmaker follows Trai Hume and Dany Batth through the door at the Stadium of Light with Lee Johnson keen to improve the Black Cats squad ahead of a promotion run-in.

Roberts made quite the name for himself at Fulham before making a £12million move to Manchester City in 2015.

The England Under-19 international was highly thought of during his youth, but has spent the majority of his career on loan away from the Etihad.

It was during a spell at Celtic, that he really showed his quality.

So much so, that Pep Guardiola saw his potential and spoke of his quality.

Roberts lined up for Brendan Rogers' Celtic side against his parent club in 2016, putting the Scottish Champions ahead at the Etihad.

Speaking to the BBC, Guardiola was pleased with his performance in that fixture.

"He has potential. I am so happy with his performance," said Guardiola.

"We are going to talk about his future at the end of the season. We know his quality but the decision is not about one game. It is for one season."

Roberts scored 15 goals in a two-year loan spell with Celtic, but has struggled since his spell at Celtic Park.

Speaking after the same game, Brendan Rogers said he was a "top young English talent" and said he was "in the right place at this time in the career".

"There's no point in him sitting on the bench and not playing," the Northern Irishman added.

"I'm sure there will be a big career for him at Manchester City. He'll come back here in the summer and Pep and his staff will have a real good look at him.

"But I think they'll be really encouraged by what they saw."

The Black Cats permanent move for the midfielder seems the right choice given the stage he's at in his career.

Roberts himself has a point to prove and Sunderland boss Johnson believes it's a 'coup' for the club.
