A food waste expert has warned shoppers not to put bottles of milk in the door of their fridge, even though this may seem like the most obvious place to put it.
With the ongoing cost of living crisis continuing to impact how we buy our food, many of us will be looking for ways to reduce waste and make sure the products we buy stay fresher for longer.
With this in mind, Tessa Clarke, from the food-sharing app OLIO, has offered her advice for shoppers to cut down on food waste, helping them save pennies, and reduce their impact on the environment.
Tessa told Dublin Live that shoppers should never keep dairy products in the door of their fridge, as this will ultimately lead to your milk going off quicker, wasting milk and your hard-earned money.
Shoppers have instead been urged to keep any dairy products stored at the back of the fridge where the temperature is coldest, ensuring your milk will have the maximum shelf life possible.
Tessa went on to explain that, although milk can indeed be frozen, bottles should only be three-quarters full so there's plenty of room for it to expand once it's inside the freezer.
This comes as M&S ditch use-by dates on bottles of milk, encouraging shoppers to give their bottles a good sniff instead.
In a statement, Catherine David, director of collaboration and change at WRAP, said: "Milk is the third most wasted food in the home behind potatoes and bread, with around 490 million pints poured down the drain every year - 18 and a half per household - worth £270 million.
"The main reason is not drinking before the Use-By date. By changing its British and organic fresh milk to a Best-Before date, M&S is instantly helping its customers save money and cut waste by giving them more time to consume the milk they buy."
