People warned of deadline next week to avail of €1,000 lump sum and double payment announced in Budget

The deadline to avail of some of the Budget 2023 cost of living measures announced last month is looming for students.

Students in receipt of the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) grant will get a double maintenance payment in December, as well as a €1,000 boost for those who avail of free fees.

This is good news but applications for the grant close next week on November 3 so students need to act fast to make sure they don't miss out on the supports.

How to apply

Applications for the student grant 2022-2023 close Thursday, 3 November 2022. To apply after the closing date you must contact SUSI to make a late application request.

You must apply for your grant online. You do not need to know what course you will be taking to apply online.

To register with SUSI and apply online for a student grant, you will need your Personal Public Service (PPS) number, an email address and a phone number.

One-off measures to help students in 2022

A double SUSI maintenance grant payment will be paid on the 16th of December 2022 . This includes PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate students getting the Special Rate of Grant.

The student contribution is reduced by €1000 for undergraduate students who are eligible for free fees. Students on the 50% student contribution rate will get a reduction of €500 in their contribution rate. If you paid the contribution and are due a refund you must provide the college with your bank details by 30th of November 2022. Find out more about getting a student contribution refund.

Postgraduate students who qualify for the postgraduate SUSI fee contribution grant will get a once-off increase of €1,000 (from €3,500 to €4,500).

PhD students getting Science Foundation Ireland or Irish Research Council awards will get a payment of €500.
