People wake up to gunshots on family street as person runs from scene

People said they woke up to the sound of gunshots in the early morning in a family street.

Police were called to reports of loud bangs on Ismay Street in Walton, after a terrace house was shot at on the street, between County Road and Goodison Road. The shooting happened at around 1.35am on Monday, July 18.

People living in the area told the ECHO how they woke up to the sound of shots fired at around 1.30am. One woman said as she looked out the window she saw someone "peg it" down the road.

She told the ECHO: "I heard shots fired at around 1.30am, and they woke me up." She added: "Police were knocking on all the doors around here. There's always something going on here."

Another man said he also heard the sounds of the shots around the same time. However thought they were just "fireworks." A cordon has been put up around the scene, as forensic officers carry our investigations. So far, detectives say they have found damage to the front of the house shot.

The terrace house had a number of windows boarded up and blue tarpaulin covered a car, however it is unclear whether this was connected to the shooting. Police confirmed today, at the time of the shooting it was further reported to officers a man wearing a green coat was seen running from the property in the direction of City Road. No injuries have been reported.

When the ECHO was at the scene today, many parents were taking their children to school and people travelling to work were met with the police scene as forensic officers went inside the house.

People living within the cordon on Ismay Street and heading to work were asked to sign by police as officers continued their enquiries. An investigation has been launched and officers remain on Ismay Street while extensive forensic, CCTV and house to-house enquiries are carried out.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: "We are in the very early stages of an investigation into a shot being fired at a house on Ismay Street and our officers are keen to speak to witnesses or anyone with any information. If you were in the area of Ismay Street in the early hours of this morning and witnessed anyone or anything suspicious then please get in touch.

"Similarly, if you were driving along Goodison Road or County Road and have dashcam footage then please check it and let us know if you see anything. Thankfully no injuries were reported but firing a gun in a residential area is unbelievably reckless and could have led to tragedy.

"I’d like to reassure the community in Walton that we believe this to be a targeted attack and we don’t believe there to be any wider threat. The number of firearms discharges on Merseyside is currently at its lowest in 21 years – but every single incident is one too many and we are doing all we can to remove guns and the misery that they bring from our streets.

"Please come forward and tell us what you know to help us remove dangerous weapons and those who use them from our communities. If you have any information please contact our social media desk on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ with any information, with reference 22000512418."
