People urged to 'avoid travel' as rail strikes set to cause chaos this weekend

A rail operator is warning of travel chaos on trains this weekend as strike action continues this weekend. The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union is set to strike this weekend, causing major disruption for travel in the north.

TransPennine Express (TPE) are urging people to not travel, or at least plan ahead, as only a small number of trains will be running. They are expecting busier trains with people heading to Liverpool if they win the Champions League on Saturday night, and asking people to therefore seek alternative transport.

Journeys between Manchester and Sheffield are also expected to be disrupted. Network Rail engineering works mean there will be no TPE services between Stockport and Sheffield so people making 'essential' trips between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield are being told to allow extra time as the journey will take at least 30 minutes longer due to using a different route.

Rail replacement services are also going to be in operation for services to Scotland. Further action by the RMT is also planned over the Jubilee weekend, on both Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June.

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director for TransPennine Express said: “Ongoing strike action by RMT continues to disrupt people’s journeys, right across our network. We are asking anyone planning a journey by rail on Sunday to avoid travel where possible and only travel if they absolutely have to. Anyone going to an event, such as the Liverpool FC victory parade in Liverpool, is urged to seek alternative transport."

Anyone making an essential journey by rail on Sunday is recommended to visit: tpexpress.co.uk/travel-updates/strike for the most up to date information. Bikes will also not be allowed onboard TPE services on strike days.
