People travel from far and wide to visit farm shop with 'amazing' fish and chips

People are travelling miles and miles to visit a farm shop that has been hailed for its high quality fish and chips.

Selling the day's catch straight from the coasts of Devon and Cornwall, the fish counter at White Row farm shop in Beckington, near Frome, has been receiving an awful lot of plaudits of late.

The shop is in a somewhat unlikely location off a roundabout on the A36, meaning it's easy for those coming from far and wide to visit, Somerset Live reported.

The White Row has its own farm attached to the shop and it endeavours to sell as much locally sourced produce as possible, meaning it's a great spot for the sustainably minded.

However, it is undeniable that the main event is the fish and chips. Fisherpeople fighting through the fearsome swells off the coasts of Cornwall and Devon have caught the staples and daily specials that whizz off the shop's fryers out of the day.

Visitors to the shop rave about the home made tartare sauce, aioli and slice of lemon that accompany the chip suppers.

Dishes likes crispy fried squid with garlic mayo, battered monkfish, Cornish fish soup with clams and tomatoes, all served with chips or new potatoes, olives, capers and sun dried tomato salad provide something a little different from classic cod and chips fare.

People travel for miles to either enjoy the food at the cafe or to buy fish to bring home and cook, with a visit to the White Row a Friday activity many indulge in.

The fishmongers at the farm shop has large queues of people coming to buy the freshest fish in the whole area.

There you can get your hands on top quality fresh fish, shellfish, smoked fish, as well as homemade fish cakes, home made taramasalata and seafood salads, seafood platters, fish soups, pies and chowders, breaded squid, cod and more.

"We love the farm shop cafe, we eat there regularly and would highly recommend it to all," one happy customer recently wrote on Tripadvisor.

"The food is of a very high quality and the price is very reasonable. We have enjoyed many of the sandwiches, the roasts, the fish and chips and the ploughman’s (over the summer).

"There is a lovely shop next door and a regularly get take away sandwiches from the supermarket for picnics.

"Great outdoor area for sitting, using the play area or seeing the pigs, ponies, alpacas, rabbits and chickens."

Another added: "This was the second time we have visited, decided on the fish and chips with mushy peas special.

"At under £12 it was fantastic value and excellent quality. Have paid a lot more for less at other laces. Staff were friendly and helpful, seats moved for wheelchair.

"On first visit we had bacon sandwich which was excellent quality but felt a little expensive at £7.50. Bread from the farm shop is wonderful and having for supper. I’m still full from lunch but can’t resist. There are some great foods in the shop, all excellent quality and some good bargains. Will definitely visit again."

If you are a little too far away from Frome to visit the farm shop but still fancy some fish and chips, then Fry Magazine's list of the best 50 chippies in the country is a good source of information.

The magazine's staff made secret visits to hundreds of fisheries across the country, rating them on cleanliness, service, prices and, of course, taste.

Reece Head, who runs the annual contest, said that profits for chippies might not be "like they have in years gone by", but "the passion certainly is".

"The businesses that make up our 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways and 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants represent the best in the industry," Reece said.

"They are pushing forwards while not losing sight of what makes the chippy so engrained in British culture - high quality, value for money food with great customer service and inviting surroundings."
