People living on a Mansfield street say their neighbours were "screaming and banging on people's doors" to warn them about a large fire in the early hours of the morning. Crews from five fire stations across Nottinghamshire attended the incident on Union Street, which has left the roof of one house at the end of the road partly caved in.
Neighbours of the property affected say the fire happened at around 1.30am on Friday, December 30, and that it left the street "filled with smoke."
Liana Stienerova, 17, who lives on Union Street with her partner, said: "I was already up watching a movie and then I saw the smoke coming from the roof of the house and it was really frightening. Everybody was really scared and nearly all of the neighbours eventually came on to the street.

"Some people were screaming and banging on people's doors to wake them up because people were worried that the fire might spread and so people needed to get out. Luckily it didn't spread and when somebody kicked the door of the house that was on fire down, nobody came out.
"We eventually came back inside because there was just too much smoke outside. I have lived here for around two years but I don't know who lives in the house."
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that crews from Ashfield, Mansfield, Edwinstowe, Blidworth and Chesterfield fire stations responded to the Union Street house fire in the early hours of December 30. A small Nottinghamshire Police car and crime scene investigation van were still at the scene of the fire at around 11am.
Union Street is a small road situated near Mansfield's Four Seasons Shopping Centre. The property affected by the fire lies at the very end of the row of houses on one side of the street, with the incident appearing to have affected the side of the roof away from other properties.
Neighbours therefore say that the fire could have been much worse. Liam Pardoe, 33, who lives on Union Street with his partner and children, said: "We were actually asleep when everything happened but we had a message from someone who had heard about the fire asking if we were okay so that's when we found out.
"This could have been a lot worse because this is a house on the end of the street and if it was one in the middle, it would have probably spread."
Terry Dixon, 38, who lives on Union Street with a friend as part of a house share, said: "I wasn't awake for much of it but it was my mate who woke me up and so I looked out of the window and just saw that the street was absolutely filled with smoke.
"There were loads of fire engines down here as well so the street was absolutely packed. I don't know the people in the house because I keep myself to myself a bit, but I hope everyone is alright."
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue added that equipment including thermal imaging cameras and an aerial ladder platform were used whilst extinguishing the blaze. Nottinghamshire Police has been contacted for further comment.
