People receiving letters from police in one part of Merseyside

People in one area of Merseyside who received letters from the police have been urged not to ignore it.

Police have said those living in the Roe Lane area of Southport need to be vigilant after two shed burglaries have been reported. These took place overnight between Monday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 8.

Officers attended the area and house to house and CCTV enquiries have been made. People living in the immediate area of one the burglaries will have received a 'burglary alert warning' letter.

Police have urged people not to dismiss the letter as they may be able to provide further information towards their investigations. Last year, this area was subject to a large number of shed burglaries.

As a result, officers letter-dropped 600 homes in the area with crime prevention information and later found 15 bikes that had been stolen from sheds garages in the area. Police also gave the following advice:

• Check outside lighting is functioning correctly.

• Locking patio doors after use.

• Locking shed doors after use and consider fitting a shed alarm.

• Lock front and back doors with a key.

• Closing windows that can be accessed easily.

• Use timer switches for lights and radios in your home

• In addition, putting away tools and devices used such as lawn mowers, garden equipment and DIY materials, thereby avoiding any unnecessary risks of theft or burglary as some garden tools are used by thieves to gain entry.

• Report any suspicious sightings or behaviour in your area.

Officers also said people need to secure any cycling and associated equipment to avoid any loss.

They also said: "It is recommended that you have any equipment security marked or registered with your own personal details. Additional locks can be obtained for security and as an aid to prevent crime being committed. A number of security options are available from your local bike store.

"Burglars are opportunists so please don’t make it easy for them. Your local Policing Team encourages Homewatch groups in all neighbourhoods so please spread the word amongst other residents, family and friends and together we can make the area safer for one and all. Last month, police also warned about an "increase" in the number of these burglaries in the Oxton area. Police said offenders appear to be targeting pedal cycles and motorbikes overnight. They urged people to ensure they are securing their property and sheds. Officers added if people have alarms, security lights, or CCTV then to use them as they "act as a deterrent".
