People only learning what WD-40 stands for as some share funny guesses

A can of WD-40 has proven instrumental in the lives of many, banishing creaks and squeaks in and around the home.

When a DIY task starts to go wrong the trusty can is always there to get things back on track. While many use and love the product, few know what the name actually stands for.

People recently took to social media to figure just that out, with some sharing funny suggestions while others were surprised to discover what the answer actually was.

In a recent tweet, American TV anchor David Muir asked his near-800,000 followers: "What does WD-40 stand for?", reports the Mirror.

One person suggested: "Whistling doohicky 40" and another said: "Something degreaser".

"World Domination 40 is what it should be named!" joked a third.

One Twitter user was quite close with their suggestion: "WD-40 means wrong decision 40 times to make the correct formula."

Many were surprised to learn it stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula. The name is actually painfully obvious – it was the 40th attempt at making the formula.

It comes after people only recently discovered what 'ASOS' stands for, as the fashion site's letters stand for 'As Seen On Screen'.

Likewise Asda shoppers are just learning the meaning behind its name that you 'couldn't guess'. The big four supermarket was born after a merger between ASquith and Associated DAiries resulting in the ASDA.
