People on the move: key North East appointments and promotions of the week

Gateshead based Transmit Startups has appointed four new experts as it seeks to help more people across the UK to start and grow their own business.

Amy Knight has joined as editorial manager, Wes Clough takes on the new role of marketing manager, Eemie Wong steps into the new position of compliance manager and Scott Allen has joined the team as a business advisor. Transmit’s operations director Ian Straker said: “We’re at a really exciting point in Transmit’s own business startup story and the appointment of these talented experts will help us to write our next chapter.

“We want to make the entrepreneurial path as smooth as possible for those who are brave enough to choose it and our brilliant new team members will help us to design and deliver the services to do just that.”

An accountant who has specialised in forensic accounting and expert witness work has joined Robson Laidler Accountants. Colin Fitzpatrick has joined as a consultant, bringing with him a number of new clients and contacts.

He said: “The growth of Robson Laidler in recent years has been notable and I am delighted to be joining a firm, which shares my ethos for providing high quality, commercial services that make real tangible impact to the client.”

Managing director Graham Purvis said: “Forensic accounting requires a specific skillset and the arrival of Colin and his clients gives us a welcome boost in this area. His skills will complement the investigations work we already do. Colin is a highly experienced forensic accountant who has acted in over 500 commercial or HMRC disputes and as an expert witness in legal cases over more than 30 years. His decision to join Robson Laidler provides further evidence of the growing attraction of us as a firm that recognises and rewards talent.”

Clive Owen LLP, chartered accountants and business advisers, has recruited eight new trainees, seeing the team grow from 112 to 122 in less than 12 months. The new recruits are Emily Myers, Taran Chatha, Ryan Bentley, Alex Smith, Joe Lucas, Ellie Rutterford, Max Bashir and Mitchell Degnan.

The firm, which has offices in York, Darlington, Durham and Middlesbrough, has also experienced growth in its client base over the last year and is now one of the largest independent firms in the region.

The trainees will work across the firms’ offices in a variety of different roles, ranging from audit and accounts to taxation associates with differing learning routes. HR director Caroline Bowerbank said: “Ensuring everyone is given opportunities to progress and to learn from colleagues will be of benefit to the new starters. They will learn from other’s experiences and be able to access helpful resources along the way.”

Nicola Bellerby, training partner, added: “Clive Owen LLP recently introduced new policies which are based on two-way flexibility and trust to support the existing teams and encourage talented, motivated people to apply for positions with us to grow the firm further.”

Aileen Wallace has been appointed as cargo business development manager at Newcastle International Airport.

Ms Wallace, who has over 25 years of experience in cargo to the airport working, will work with businesses and other key stakeholders across the region to further develop cargo opportunities from the airport.

She said: “Newcastle International Airport already has fantastic capabilities and is home to over 15 airlines, handling over 400 tonnes of cargo every month. We are keen to continue to grow our cargo presence within the region, and I cannot wait to be a part of it.”

“The North of England is a special place, and I am pleased to have been given the fantastic opportunity to work at the North East’s largest Airport. Air freight holds huge economic value, and the region is home to many chemistry-using-companies, including pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, which employ over 190,000 people in the North East. This sector alone exports £12bn worth of cargo each year, and I am excited to support the continued growth of the local economy and Newcastle International Airport’s cargo presence.”

North East industrialist Andrew Esson has been appointed as a non-executive director at Turnmill Engineering.

The company said Mr Esson will bring both extensive expertise and passion to help Turnmill, based at Washington Business Centre on Wearside, further grow and prosper.

Turnmill, which is a member of NOF, manufactures consumables, jigs and fixtures and machine components predominantly for automotive, pharmaceuticals, motorsport and construction businesses.

Mr Esson has a portfolio of non-executive and advisory roles and through his business Esson Partnership Limited, works to help businesses grow and develop in the region and beyond.

He said: “I relish new challenges and really enjoy working with growing and ambitious businesses such as Turnmill. I am looking forward to using my knowledge and expertise to help optimise opportunities and prospects at the company.”

A BBC MasterChef finalist has been appointed Cookery School head chef for Blackfriars in Newcastle.

Anthony O’Shaughnessy has returned to his hometown to help thousands of people in the region to improve their cooking skills with weekday and weekend classes, private parties and corporate events at the Cookery School which is located above Blackfriars Restaurant.

Prior to joining Blackfriars, Mr O’Shaughnessy worked for restaurants across the UK and was a former cookery tutor for Leeds Cookery School where he delivered cookery courses within Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food. He took part in BBC’s MasterChef in 2018 and reached the semi-finals.

He said: ‘I’m delighted to be returning to my hometown and driving forward the largest purpose-built cookery school in our region. I’ve spent the last five years training in Yorkshire as a chef and cookery school tutor, and I’m incredibly proud to bring home a diverse skillset to enrich our grand city.”
