People 'not surprised' they live near one of Nottinghamshire's worst roads for speeding drivers

People living near a major Nottinghamshire road are "not surprised" it has seen the highest number of offences captured by the county's average speed cameras. Nottinghamshire Police data has revealed the worst roads in terms of the number of average speed camera offences recorded over the last three years.

The cameras work by monitoring a driver's speed over a length of road, in contrast to other speed cameras which capture it in a single flash. People can also be caught speeding by mobile speed cameras or by passing police officers.

The Nottinghamshire Police data, released following a Freedom of Information request, shows that one major Nottingham road has seen the most average speed camera offences. The cameras on the A610 Nuthall Road between Stockhill Lane and Bar Lane, where there is a 30mph speed limit, recorded nearly 2,000 offences during 2022.

This figure has been much higher in previous years, with the same stretch of road seeing around 2,800 offences in 2021 and around 2,700 offences in 2020. Although not always the specific section between Stockhill Lane and Bar Lane, Nuthall Road has recorded the most average speed camera offences in Nottinghamshire for the last three years.

People living just off Nuthall Road say they often see "dangerous" drivers along it. Valerie Whalley, 61, said: "You wouldn't think there was actually a speed limit on this road because there are so many Kamikaze drivers on it.

"A lot of people are in too much of a hurry to get to wherever they are going and so they rush to get past the traffic lights. I've lived here since 1995 and the road is just ridiculous now, it was actually widened some years ago so it is very busy."

The section of Nuthall Road between Stockhill Lane and Bar Lane happens to be one of the locations where Nottinghamshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Caroline Henry, was caught speeding in early 2021. The commissioner had a speed of 40mph recorded along the road on March 18 2021, with four other offences meaning she was given a six-month driving ban after a court hearing last May.

Given its proximity to the M1 and to Nottingham City Centre, many local residents did note that the amount of traffic on Nuthall Road was also a factor in the number of speeding offences recorded on it. William Newman, 72, said: "You definitely do see a lot of idiots driving about in a hurry and I didn't know this was the worst road for speeding, but it is a very busy one.

"I've lived here for around 40 years and it has always been a major artery road. It is obviously a 30mph limit along here and yet some people drive down it as if it's the motorway."

Francesco De Vivo, 70, said: "It doesn't surprise me that this road is the worst for speeding. It is obviously very busy because you're near the centre of Nottingham and the motorway, so pulling out onto Nuthall Road is really hard sometimes.

"The only time it was quiet here was obviously during lockdown. But as soon as restrictions were lifted, the traffic went straight back to normal and now the speeding is probably worse."

Below are the top ten Nottinghamshire roads in terms of the number of average speed camera offences recorded in 2022. The figures do not reflect how many offences eventually led to a fine or penalty points being issued.
