People in Wales have strong opinions on Liz Truss after what she said about Mark Drakeford

This week has certainly seen Liz Truss making headlines, if not new political friends, during her leadership hustings alongside Rishi Sunak. First of all the 47-year-old, who's in the running to become the next UK Prime Minister, called Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon an "attention seeker" who is "best ignored" at an event in Exeter on Monday.

Then, during the pair's stop off in Cardiff last night (Wednesday, August 3), she described Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford as a "low energy version of Jeremy Corbyn." And her words prompted a huge response on social media from people all around the country.

"It's sad when somebody has so little in their own locker that they have to resort to defaming other people," said Carl Lewis from Pontypridd. "We haven't just got poor politicians in central government, we have poor examples of human beings too."

"She wouldn’t know an honest, decent and truly caring politician if she bumped into one," agreed Les Rees. "That’s the problem with so many MPs in Westminster - they care so much about themselves and so little for others."

Caroline Campbell called Truss a "vile little woman," adding that "Mark Drakeford is just the loveliest most honest man around." Similarly, Mike Haynes criticised Truss's "demonising" of Wales and Scotland's "democratically elected leaders," before likening her policies - such as opposing the right of workers' to strike - to those of a "tin pot dictator."

"Proving once again the Tories have no respect for Wales and our democracy, " added Jamie Evans. "Keep up the good work of bringing people over to (the move for) independence."

But there were also plenty of those for whom there was no love lost as far as Drakeford is concerned. "Good on Truss for calling him out," said Cardiff's Dawn Covill.

"I had to live under Darth Dripford's rules whilst living in the capital. (Labour are) doing nothing for the Welsh Economy and are killing off businesses, yet they want more members in the Senedd - a complete joke." "First thing I've heard her (Truss) say that gets a round of applause from me," added Mark Davies, while Kenneth Ransom concurred: "Good to hear a politician speak the truth."

However, support for the Tory hopeful seemed generally outnumbered by those who found her comments crass and, as Wendy Kilbane put it, "more childish than kids in a playground." "If anyone actually thinks the Tories would be better for Wales than Mark Drakeford, then they need to give their heads an almighty wobble," said Paul Rowley.

"She is a Margaret Thatcher wannabe with no diplomacy," added Donna Walters from Bridgend. "Let's just have a general election and vote these elitist numbskulls out."
