People in Liverpool area urged to lock windows and doors after burglaries

People in a part of Liverpool have been urged to check that their windows and doors are locked after a spate of burglaries.

Merseyside Police has warned people as they attempt to keep properties cool during this spell of hot weather by leaving windows and doors open or unlocked. The force has said this has led to an increase in burglaries across the L4 postcode area, which includes Kirkdale, Walton and Anfield.

The latest BBC weather forecast predicts that Liverpool will hit highs of 29C today (August 11) and 30C on Friday (August 12). The weekend will see even higher temperatures, with the mercury predicted to hit 32C (August 13) and 30C on Sunday (August 14).

It says that more officers will be on patrol in the L4 areas in the coming days, while residents are urged to look out for updates from the police, including on social media.

The police has issued to following tips to beat opportunistic burglars:

  • Keep your front and back doors locked even when you are home.
  • Secure your shed and garage.
  • Set your house alarm when you go out or when you go to sleep at night, consider getting some CCTV.
  • Use light timers when you go out at night or on holiday.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and screen your windows using blinds or thorny hedges.
  • Finally, look out for your neighbours - especially the elderly and report anything suspicious to the police.
