Simon Harris has become Ireland’s youngest taoiseach after the Dáil elected him with 88 votes in favour of his appointment and 69 against. He succeeds Leo Varadkar, who unexpectedly announced his resignation last month.
The new Fine Gael party leader said: “I accept this new role in a spirit of humility, ready for the challenge, and full of energy and determination about what can be achieved. As taoiseach I want to bring new ideas, a new energy, and a new empathy to public life.”
We want to hear from Irish people on their reaction to Harris’ appointment. What does his election mean for you and what are your hopes for the future?
