People cringe as mum gives baby the same name as major retail chain

Choosing a name for your bundle of joy can be a difficult process. Even after settling on a favourite pick, many parents are left worrying their friends and family won't embrace their choice. Unfortunately for one new mum, her baby's moniker has not gone down well with everyone in her life, and the unusual option also caused a stir when it was revealed online.

Inspired by the name's meaning, the mum opted to call her daughter Sephora. While the word, which means "pretty", is certainly a lovely-sounding pick, it also reminded many of the popular retail chain with the same name.

And the similarity was not lost on one of the mum's acquaintances, who took to Reddit to ask people about their thoughts on giving a child the same name as a beauty store.

"A girl from my home town named her baby Sephora and I want your thoughts! For me I think of the makeup place haha. I know the origins of it mean 'pretty' but it's definitely a unique name," wrote the anonymous friend.

In response, many were quick to praise the beautiful name but say they wouldn't choose it for their children.

One commenter said: "I kind of cringed. It's not an ugly name, but all I can think of is 'influencer wannabe' naming their kid after a make-up chain kind of vibe, you know?"

A second thought: "It's too strongly associated with the store for me, but I can understand the appeal of it sound-wise - in which it reminds me of Zipporah, Sapphira and Seraphina."

And someone added: "I love the name Zara so I have nowhere to talk, but Sephora seems like too much? I wouldn’t do it to a child."

Replying to the Zara lover, a different commenter claimed: "Zara feels much different than Sephora, probably because it was already a very popular name.

"Naming your kid Macy is going to go much differently than naming them Nike. Like, they're all names and words, but some were already popular and fairly common names before they were brands."
