People convinced 'time traveller' spotted wearing Nike shoes in 400-year-old painting

Fans have been left puzzled by a painting in the National Gallery from the 17th century, which appears to show a boy wearing Nike shoes.

A mum and daughter spotted what appears to be proof of time travel on the Portrait of a Boy, painted by Dutch Master Ferdinand Bol.

It shows an eight-year-old boy standing in front of a chair next to a table with a red cloth on it, while holding a goblet, which is resting on the table.

The boy is wearing a black jacket and cape, a white, ruffled shirt and black boots. However, the boots appear to have the famous white Nike 'tick' on one side. The picture echoes Marty McFly in Back to the Future, who goes back in time wearing a pair of Nikes.

Nike, one of the world's leading sports brands, was founded in 1964, more than 300 after the grand portrait was painted..

Fiona Foskett, 57, spotted the sneakers while visiting the gallery in London with her daughter Holly, 23. The pair had travelled over from the Isle of Wight.

Fiona told The Sun: "I said to my daughter, 'Hold on, is he wearing a pair of Nike trainers?' Looking at the age, he must have got his hands on the first pair of Nike trainers ever made. Or is he actually a time traveller?"

A spokesman from the National Gallery told the publication: "We are delighted that this picture has been such a hit with our visitors.

"It resonated with followers when we put out a Tweet asking people to see if they could spot a more 'modern' detail by taking a closer look at the shoes of the eight-year-old boy in the portrait."

Earlier this month, an iPhone was apparently spotted in a painting from nearly 90 years ago, causing similar confusion and interest.

Umberto Romano completed Mr Pynchon And The Settling Of Springfield in 1937, 70 years before the first iPhone was released.

However, fans insist they can see a person in the bottom right corner of the picture holding a very modern piece of tech to his face, even gripping it in his palm with his thumb free.

It has been suggested the item is actually a knife or mirror, which would make more sense, but is slightly boring. With Romano dying in 1982, before mobile phones became popular, sadly we will never know.
