Many people will be looking forward to the spell of hot weather this weekend.
But not everyone will welcome a heatwave.
Temperatures on this scale pose a risk to life, particularly among the elderly and the clinically vulnerable, and put increased pressure on the NHS and emergency services.
Hundreds of events have already had to be cancelled because of fears for people’s health.
The exceptional heat will also cause disruption and is threatening to wreck harvests.
Across Europe areas have been devastated by wildfires, including holiday destinations in the South of France and Portugal’s Algarve.
We are witnessing the climate crisis in action. Britain needs to be much better prepared for long, hot summers to keep people safe and ensure workers do not have to toil in unbearable conditions.
It also underlines the importance of reducing emissions to zero by 2050.
People can shelter from the sun but they cannot hide from the reality of climate change and the damage it is causing to our planet.
Arena appeal
Ismail Abedi was today convicted in his absence for failing to attend the public inquiry into the Manchester Arena attack committed by his brother.
His refusal to give evidence was an act of cowardice that showed no respect for the victims and survivors of the 2017 bombing.
The police and authorities have serious questions to answer as to why Abedi was allowed to leave the country.
His testimony could have helped establish the truth about the outrage that the families deserve to know. Every effort must be made to track Abedi down and bring him to justice.
Royal grilling
Get the popcorn ready. Prince Andrew’s notorious interview on Newsnight is to be turned into a feature film.
They just need to find an actor who doesn’t sweat and can say his lines more convincingly than the disgraced royal.
