People are only just realising this not-so-hidden secret about London's Tube lines

More than three million people take the Tube every day, adding up to 1.181 billion journeys between 2023 and 2024.

If you commute to and from work at the very least, that’s two or more Tube rides every day, not to mention any travel outside going to and from the workplace.

However, as people normally while away their time on the Underground with their phones, books, music or podcasts, they might not have noticed something right in front of them.

Desh Bhatt, a London-based content creator of tips and tricks for enjoying time in the capital, has shared a video pointing out that the colours of the poles and seats correspond to the Tube line colours.

“I was today years old when I realised that the colours of the poles and seats match the Tube line colours,” he wrote in the caption, before going on to point out yellow poles and seat patterns on the Circle line, silver for Jubilee, red for the Central line and blue for Victoria.

Those are just a few of the colour-coded Tube lines, of course – and it’s worth noting that this is a general rule with a few exceptions.

For example, a commentator pointed out that “sometimes the district line (green line) has yellow poles, so don't jump on a train based on pole colour”.

Others have pointed out that the Northern, Metropolitan and Bakerloo lines don’t have colour-matched poles and seats.

It’s more of a fun fact when you notice it, rather than a specific rule of thumb to apply to all Underground trains.

Some commentators are surprised by the revelation. Instagram user swimbikerunmd1 commented: “I get the tube every day and didn’t know this.”

“Learning something new every day!” agreed spoonful_of_moon.
