People have been left absolutely gobsmacked after learning what actually happens during a C-section operation. TikTok user and Obstetrical Nurse, Tina, who goes by @ mamma_nurse on the platform, shared an informative video explaining exactly how a caesarean is done - and viewers cannot believe their eyes.
With a caesarean sometimes being considered as the ‘easy option’ for giving birth, with phrases such as “too posh to push” often used to describe those who opt for a C-section over natural birth, people are rethinking this narrative after watching the astonishing video.
In the short clip posted on TikTok, the nurse uses felt cut outs to show how during a C-section surgery to remove a baby from a mother’s uterus, the surgeons must get through seven layers of tissue before they reach the baby.
This includes the skin, the fat layer, facia, muscle, peritoneum, uterus wall and then finally, the amniotic sac - which is where the baby is.
But viewers simply couldn’t believe how complex the surgery is, taking to the comments to express their shock. One user said: "I have never had a C-section but this made my belly hurt," while another admitted it was "Way more complicated than I thought."
Notably, hundreds of women who have themselves undergone C-sections have flooded the comments, sharing their own shock at the very procedure they themselves underwent - some more than once.
One mum said: "I had an emergency C-section and I’m so proud of my body for going through all of this," with another revealing: "I’ve had two C-sections 5 years apart. Didn’t realise there were so many layers!"
A third mum added: "Wooo us women are amazing!"
In the UK, 1 in 4 pregnant women will end up giving birth via caesarean and the video, which has been viewed more than 6 million times and received nearly 1 million likes in just one day, has revealed to many the seriousness of the surgery.
Tina (@mamma_nurse) uses her own experience as an obstetrical nurse - and mum - to share all kinds of insights and tips for giving birth, including using creative ways to guide women through pregnancy and birth, answering their questions and addressing their fears.
