Fast fashion retailer Shein has seen a huge rise in popularity over the years, and whether you love it or hate it, there is no escaping it. Known for its relatively cheap clothing, shoes and accessories, the Chinese online shopping outlet was named the most popular brand in 2022 by money.co.uk.
While most of us have probably bought something from Shein, or have at least heard of the brand, it seems not many of us really know how you pronounce its name. Shine, Sheen - shoppers have been calling it both in the years since the brand was launched back in 2008, but it's actually something else and those of us who have been saying it wrong are shocked.
TikTok user @katelynjensen19 unintentionally sparked up a debate on the correct way of pronouncing it when she shared details of an outfit she was wearing in one of her videos. While she was criticised for the way she said it, she proved everyone wrong by sharing proof from the fashion brand itself that she was right, the Liverpool Echo reports.
While a lot of people admitted they have been pronouncing it 'sheen' over the years, it is actually pronounced 'She-in'. In a bid to prove that they way she was saying it was correct, Katelyn shared a follow-up to her outfit video with a screenshot from the company's Twitter confirming the pronunciation.

She said: "I just went out and got my own proof. So if anybody ever comes for me again for saying 'she-in', please just do some research first honey, rather than listening to your influencers who say 'sheen' - it's 'she-in'."
She then displayed a Tweet exchange between the brand and a customer. As seen in the message she shared, someone went straight to the source to find out 'How do we pronounce Shein?' @SHEIN_Official replied: "Hi there! It's pronounced SHE- in."
Wowed by the news, the video gained more than 51,000 likes and more than 218,000 views and stunned shoppers were keen to add their comments. "Everyone told me that was wrong," one person said. "Omg I used to say it correctly but I let me friends influence me to say it wrong," another added.
Others were adamant they were still going to call the brand by the name they have been using for it for years. "I'm still calling it sheen," one said. Another comment, with nearly 3,000 likes, said: "I still like she-en and I'll keen saying it because to me it sounds better."
Some TikTok users were keen to share that they had been saying it right all along. "THANK YOU!! I literally got into an argument with my sister about this," one said. Another wrote: "I can't imagine pronouncing it any other way."
