People are just realising why McDonald's chicken nugget boxes have holes in them

McDonald's fans are apparently only just realising why the takeaway favourite McNuggets come in a box with holes.

A joke on a viral TikTok seemed to teach many people the reason for this as one girl ordered a 20-piece sharebox of the snack, the Star reports.

Rachel Anderson posted about her meal on the video-sharing app, saying: "Why do McDonald's put these little holes on the side of the box? Is it not like a little bit too late for that?" This was a reference to how small animals need to be transported in boxes with air holes, so they can breathe.

The joke seemed to go over the heads of some, with people rushing to the comments with their own explanation of why they were there.

One said: "Lets the steam get out so they don’t go soggy."

And another wrote: "If you leave hot objects in a box without much airflow it gets soggy. It's to ventilate better."

However, Rachel's joke landed well with other viewers, who said it "took them a minute" to understand what she was referring to.

One said: "It’s for the chickens, so they can breathe".

Another also joked that the nuggets "need to breathe" because they "can't have them dying now".

McDonald's announced yesterday it would be closing its franchises on Monday September 19, as a mark of respect for the Queen's funeral.

In a tweet, it said: "All of our UK restaurants will be closed on Monday until 5pm, to allow everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

A Government statement said: "Monday 19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday. This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning."
