We have all seen the letters WC on the toilet doors, but have you ever wondered why it's there? Many people have taken to social media to share their surprise after learning the acronym actually stands for water closet.
However, even this wasn't always the case as back in the day it was initially called a wash-down closet. Once indoor plumbing became more common for households many people turned their clothing closets into a small bathroom with a toilet, reports The Sun.
Due to this being one of the only places in the home with running water inside, it became known as a water closet. After the realisation of the history of the letters, many people have taken to Twitter to share their shock.

One person tweeted: "What do you mean wc stands for water closet." Another commented: "WTF THE WC ON TOILET DOORS MEANS WATER CLOSET?????????????????????.
"WHY AM I ONLY LEARNING THIS NOW?" A third stated: "I was 23 y/o when I learned that WC is called water closet."
Yet another wrote: "I just found out the WC outside a bathroom means Water Closet." The confusion continued, as another user stated: "Idk since i found out wc on a toilet means water closet i haven't been the same since."
Additionally many people know refer to a toilet as a bathroom, but a bathroom typically used to be the room that had a bath and this would be completely separate from the toilet.
