Pensioner to stand trial accused of stealing £18k from elderly woman in Falkirk

An 85-year-old man is to face trial, accused of stealing more than £18,000 from a now-deceased 76-year-old woman.

George Wilson is said to have stolen "a quantity of money in the amount of approximately £18,500" over a period of nearly three years between September 1st 2016 and May 22nd 2019 from Helen Canavan, at a flat in Leishman Tower, in Seaton Place, Falkirk.

A procedural hearing in the case was held in Wilson's absence at Falkirk Sheriff Court today.

Wilson, of Falkirk, denies the charge.

Prosecutor Robbie McDougall said it was hoped that the entire Crown case could be agreed - apart from the question of whether or not Wilson had permission to take the money.

Mrs Canavan was aged between 73 and 76 during the period of the alleged crime.

Defence solicitor John Mulholland said: "She was infirm, prior to her passing away."

Sheriff John Morris QC commented: "It is a lot of money."

He set trial for August 2nd (2022).
