Pensioner 'scared to walk the street' after second shooting in as many weeks

A pensioner said she's "scared to walk the street" after a second shooting in as many weeks.

The woman in Knotty Ash told the ECHO she is frightened to walk the streets after a house was peppered with bullets late last night. Merseyside Police was called to Max Road in Knotty Ash just before 11pm on Wednesday, July 13 following reports a house was hit by a number of bullets.

Once officers arrived they found damage to the front of the property and evidence it had been shot multiple times. Witnesses claimed to have heard several loud bangs before reports two men were seen speeding away from the scene on scrambler bikes in the direction of the shops on Finch Lane.

There are no reports of any injuries in the reckless act. But it remains the second shooting in the surrounding area in as many weeks - and the fourth in Merseyside in a month. On Saturday, July 2 a gunman opened fire on a 23-year-old man in a pedestrianised area between Croxdale Road West and Croxdale Road, West Derby.

Footage seen by the ECHO showed a man standing over the victim before unleashing a hail of bullets into his legs and back. The victim survived and remains in hospital.

The mindless violence happened just a 10 minute walk from last night's shooting. Today a pensioner, who lived on a nearby street, told the ECHO : "It's just getting worse. There was the other incident around the corner the other day. I'm frightened to walk the streets. You don't know when they're going to go off."

On Max Road residents expressed concerns but also surprise an incident of this seriousness happened on their road. One man, who has lived on the street for 20 years, said the street is predominantly made up of pensioners and families.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he saw a lot more trouble on the street just around the corner where he used to live. He said "life is much quieter since making the move". But he added: "It's not nice when an incident like this happens on your own road."

Today the street remained quiet apart from a steady procession of police. Officers guarded a cordon that covered a stretch of the road. Forensic officers worked in the terraced house hit by bullets. A wooden board was seen covering the front window.

Neighbours could enter their houses as long as they notified a police officer. Cars caught inside the cordon were unable to leave. Shortly before 11am Matrix teams began a fingertip search of the cordon, searching under the cars and in front gardens for any evidence.

A number of detectives had also began house-to-house enquiries appealing for any more information from residents. An investigation has been officially launched and enquiries are ongoing to establish if the scrambler bike riders and the shooting are connected.

Detective Inspector John Mullen said: "The investigation is in the very early stages as we seek to establish what has taken place. We would ask anyone who was in the area of Max Road at around 11pm last night who saw or heard anything or anyone with dash cam or Ring doorbell in the local area to check their cameras to see if they captured anything significant and contact us.

"This is clearly reckless behaviour which will not be tolerated and extensive enquiries are being carried out to find the people responsible and apprehend them."
