Pensioner on mobility scooter stopped by police on busy 70mph road

This is the moment stunned cops pulled over a pensioner who was pootling along a 70mph road at rush hour on a mobility scooter. The OAP, identified by police as “Dennis”, was spotted trundling down a slip road towards the busy A38 on an 8mph scooter.

Traffic police dashed to the scene at 9.05am on Tuesday. Officers closed off the slip road to allow Dennis to turn around and travel back up the road against the flow of traffic to safety.

It is not clear where retired Merchant Navy sailor Dennis - who has 63 years driving experience - was heading before he was pulled over. A picture showed the moment Dennis was stopped by police who hauled him onto white zig-zag markings just feet away from busy traffic on the road in Mickleover, Derby,

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: “A call out to assist young ‘Dennis’ who mistakenly thought he could roll down the A38 on a mobility scooter. Despite driving for 63 years, travelling the world with the Merchant Navy and his mobility scooter having a max speed of seven knots, we went to his rescue. Thanks to our colleagues from Derby City Police (Derby West) for shutting the entry slip road so we could get Dennis to take a port side turn and travel contra-flow.”

Social media users were quick to see the funny side, branding the rogue pensioner "Dennis the A38 Menace".

Twitter user Anton Andrews said: "Good on police for simply turning the old boy around, bless him. He was probably just as shocked as them!"

Another commented: "Three cheers for Dennis the A38 Menace. He clearly realised traffic jams on that road mean 8mph is top speed for most cars on there."

Max Howell wrote: "Sounds like an episode from Only Fools and Horses."
