Woman left injured and shaken after she was robbed as she walked alone in Dunston Park

A pensioner has been left injured and 'very shaken' after becoming the victim of a robbery as she walked alone in a Gateshead park.

At about 9.45pm on Friday, March 18, a woman in her 70s was walking alone in Dunston Park. She was approached by a man who she did not know who attempted to grab her handbag.

He then made off from the scene with her bag, which contained cash, bank cards and her mobile phone. The victim sustained an injury to her hand and was left very shaken as a result of the incident.

An investigation has now been launched into the robbery and Northumbria Police is asking anyone who saw anybody acting suspiciously in that area at the time to come forward.

DS Scott Youngman said: "This is an appalling incident and whoever is responsible should be ashamed of themselves.

"The victim in this case showed incredible bravery in a distressing situation, and we are committed to identifying the person who attacked her and bringing them to justice.

"I am today asking anybody who was in that area or who saw anybody suspicious making off from that location to get in touch immediately. Your information, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be, could be the crucial piece in ensuring the woman’s attacker rightly has their day in court."

The offender is described as a white male, around 6ft tall and wearing a dark hoody and face covering.
