Pensioner dies after being struck by vehicle in Lanarkshire town centre car park

A pensioner has died after being struck by a vehicle in a car park in Airdrie town centre.

The 84-year-old man was in the Hallcraig Street facility when a blue Honda Civic collided with him at around 9.20am yesterday morning.

The man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he tragically was pronounced dead a short time later.

The car park was closed for around four hours while investigations were carried out and re-opened around 1pm.

Road Policing officers are now appealing for information following the fatal crash.

Sergeant Andy Currie told Lanarkshire Live : “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died at what is a difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to police to contact us.

“The pedestrian had driven a red Ford Fiesta car to the area and we would ask anyone who saw this car and the Civic prior to the crash to get in touch.

“Additionally, if anyone was in the area at the time and has dash-cam footage which may assist, I would ask them to contact us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101, quoting incident 0817 of October 26.

Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
