A pensioner who hurled racist abuse while overtaking a group of cyclists before reversing into one of their bikes has been banned from driving for 15 months.
Gareth Jones, 71, was driving along a country road in Wales when he came across the group and shouted "go back to England" through the car window.
One cyclist described how the white Kia driven by Jones got so close that he was almost wedged in-between the car and the hedgerow on the island of Anglesey.
Jones was said to be overtaking the group when he called them "English b*******" even though one of them was in fact Dutch, reports North Wales Live.
He then stopped the car, sped back up the road and reversed into one of the bikes, the court heard.
Jones, from the Welsh village of Llanddona, was sentenced at Caernarfon Magistrates Court on Monday.
He was convicted of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident and a racially-aggravated public order offence following his trial last month.
The court heard that the incident happened on a narrow road by Bryngwyn Farm in Llandegfan on July 26 last year.
Prosecutor Diane Williams said there had been limited space on the road and that the cyclists were in single file.
As Jones overtook the riders, one of them felt the hedgerow on his left arm while the car was very close to his right elbow.
Cyclist Valentin Scambraks even had to pull over to prevent himself from falling over.
The Kia Sportage continued up the road but then stopped and reversed, hitting Mr Scambraks' front wheel and then driving off, the prosecutor said.
"It was deliberate reversing and deliberate dangerous driving," she added.
A probation officer said that while Jones accepts the verdicts he maintained in an interview that he was "ganged up upon".
He also claimed that he was the one cursed at and called a "Welsh "b******".
The pensioner, who represented himself at his sentencing, told magistrates: "I apologise about this offence.
"I now realise that I have been found guilty by the court and I have done wrong."
His defence said Jones, who lives alone with his dog, suffered a stroke two years ago, has breathing difficulties and takes 15 tablets a day.
Magistrates chairman Gordon Browne said: "You were driving too close to the cyclists you were overtaking.
"You reversed back to one cyclist at speed in an aggressive, deliberate and intimidating manner.
"There was also damage to a bicycle."
Jones was handed a six-month community order and a curfew to stay at home between 7pm and 7am.
He was also disqualified from driving for 15 months and will have to take an extended retest before he can drive again.
For the racially-aggravated public order offence, Jones was fined £155.
He must also pay £360 towards costs and a £95 surcharge.
