Pensioner, 94, beaten unconscious by evil robber who pretended to need a glass of water

A callous robber who beat a 94-year-old victim over the head with a chair after pretending to need a glass of water has been jailed for 14 years.

Evil Amanda Hallows left the elderly resident unconscious after forcing her way into the victim's home saying she was thirsty.

The "calculated" attack was all so Hallows could steal the victim's reading glasses and a small amount of money.

A court heard how Hallows, 37, specifically targeted the pensioner's home in Burngreave, Sheffield, before carrying out the violent assault.

Knocking on the door, the robber claimed she was wandering around the area and thirsty, asking if she could have a glass of water at around 11am on May 24 last year.

A judge at Sheffield Crown court jailed Hallows for 14 years (PA)

After being brought a bottle of water, Hallows demanded a glass instead, before aggressively shoving her way inside.

Sheffield Crown court the defendant pushed the victim - who has sadly since died - by grabbing them by the shoulder and their eye, causing them to fall to the floor.

She then grabbed a wooden chair and hit the victim over the head where they lay, threatening to “finish” them if they moved.

The victim then lost consciousness, later waking to find their home had been ransacked and called for help.

Hallows' attack left them with a gash to the forehead that needed hospital treatment.

During the search, Hallows snatched a wallet containing bank cards, the victim's reading glasses and other items including coins.

The robber, from Sheffield, was later identified by police and pleaded guilty last week to robbery.

A judge jailed her for 14 years.

Investigating Officer Stephanie Sales from South Yorkshire Police, who led the investigation, said: “Hallows committed a callous and calculated attack on a vulnerable member of our society.

“I would like to commend the victim for their bravery during this investigation and pass my condolences onto their family after they sadly passed away recently.

“They demonstrated grit and determination throughout the investigation, attended court to face their attacker and did so with strength.

“I would also like to extend my thanks to the victim’s support network.

“Hallows’ conduct is completely unacceptable and I hope that today’s sentencing reflects that this behaviour is not tolerated within our community.”
