Is the McDonald's tipster who helped authorities catch alleged CEO killer Luigi Mangione eligible to collect the $60,000 reward?
Monetary rewards often are offered in high-profile cases, usually with the stipulation that the information leads to an arrest. How and when these rewards actually pay off can depend on several factors.
In this case, the FBI offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the Dec. 4 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Police released images of the person they believed to be responsible. Someone saw a person they thought resembled the pictures and made a phone call.
In such circumstances, the federal agency involved can nominate a source to an interagency board. That board can then determine the relevance of the information to the outcome of the investigation, The Associated Press reported.
The NYPD Crime Stoppers also offered $10,000. That figure will not pay out unless the information leads to a conviction, according to PEOPLE.
Also, if the rewards payout, they still will be subject to taxes, significantly lowering the amount, PEOPLE noted.
There had been some rumors that the McDonald's tipster might not be eligible for the money. However, The Washington Post confirmed with the New York City Police Foundation that the tipster was, indeed, eligible to receive that portion of the reward.
