Scorchers, Strikers notch WBBL wins

Beth Mooney has rediscovered her groove with an unbeaten 99 to power Perth past WBBL ladder leaders Sydney Sixers and into second place.

The prolific Scorchers opener struck back-to-back boundaries in the penultimate over to pass the Sixers' 5-155 with nine balls and nine wickets to spare at Perth's Lilac Hill.

Her 36th 50-plus score broke a run of nine games without a half-century, Mooney peppering the offside boundary with cuts and cover drives in a commanding 58-ball knock.

The former Brisbane Heat skipper passed 50 in 34 balls then swung the game in the Scorchers' favour with three fours and a six in succession off a Maitlan Brown over.

Mooney looked in some physical distress and needed assistance during the innings.

But she did not throw her wicket away, happy to hit a four to win rather than chase a six that would have also handed her a third WBBL century.

"We're heading to the pointy end of the competition so you want to grab momentum and the Sixers have been the form team, so to grab one off them is really exciting," she said.

"I haven't been overly happy with how I've been hitting it.

"People look to me to take the game on a bit more and I did that better today."

Sophie Devine (10 off six) was the only wicket to fall, with Chloe Piparo (41 not out off 47) a willing partner as the Sixers lost just their second game in the campaign.

Ellyse Perry (69 not out off 58) top-scored for the Sixers; Brown (27) and Erin Burns (25) pushing their side to a solid total with some late hitting.

They had no answer with the ball though, with Ash Gardner (1-19 in four overs) the only bowler to go for less than a run a ball.

In the first game, Madeline Penna's composed knock was the difference as Adelaide Strikers inched past Melbourne Stars in a low-scoring clash.

Chasing 113 at Lilac Hill, the Strikers were 3-18 when imports Deandra Dottin (0), Katie Mack (4) and Laura Wolvaardt (4) all fell.

Penna (56 not out from 50 balls) and Bridget Patterson (31 off 33) put on 44 to stop the rot before Penna kicked on to see the Strikers home with five balls to spare.

She latched onto one pull shot for a timely six and drove well, bucking the trend on a day dominated by bowlers to embed the Strikers (5-3) in the top four.

Earlier, Annabel Sutherland played a lone hand with the bat for the Stars, her 41-ball 47 coming while Megan Schutt (2-23) and Amanda-Jade Wellington (3-20) tormented her teammates.

Sutherland also took 2-19 from her four overs, but her solo efforts were not enough as the Stars dropped to 2-4.
