Pelosi supports bipartisan immigration deal, calls for border improvements

Supportive of bipartisan immigration deal for border security and asylum seekers

The 2024 presidential race is shaping up to be a rematch between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. As November approaches, voters may find themselves experiencing a sense of déjà vu and wondering how this rematch will play out. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi weighed in on this and other topics in a recent interview.

One of the pressing issues discussed was the bipartisan immigration deal emerging in the U.S. Senate. President Biden has called on Congress to pass this deal so that he can 'shut down the border right now and fix it quickly.' Pelosi expressed her support for the legislation, emphasizing that it was a compromise and negotiation between Democrats and Republicans. While not all principles were included, Pelosi stated that it would be a step forward in improving the situation at the border. She also highlighted the need for comprehensive immigration reform, although she acknowledged the limitations given the current composition of Congress.

The topic of healthcare also came up, with Pelosi emphasizing the importance of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and accusing former President Trump of spreading misinformation about it. Pelosi highlighted the progress made through the ACA, such as increased healthcare access and protection for individuals with preexisting conditions. She urged voters to consider the policies and outcomes rather than getting caught up in misrepresentations during the campaign.

In terms of the 2024 race, Pelosi stressed the need for Democrats to focus on their message and the impact of policies on individuals' daily lives. She highlighted issues such as healthcare, women's reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental preservation, and gun violence prevention as priorities for young people and progressives. Pelosi expressed confidence in President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, adding that Democrats would work to secure victories in the House and potentially increase their numbers in the Senate through grassroots organizing efforts.

Regarding protests against President Biden's support for Israel during its conflict with Hamas, Pelosi acknowledged the presence of genuine anger among some corners of the progressive movement. She also mentioned experiencing protests herself. However, Pelosi cautioned against losing sight of the suffering and violence occurring in the region and the need to address those issues. She called for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and noted her concerns about potential Russian influence in some of the protests, requesting that the FBI investigate possible financing connections.

As the 2024 election approaches, it remains to be seen how the rematch between Trump and Biden will unfold. The Democratic Party, led by Pelosi, aims to rally support through a message centered on values, policy accomplishments, and the importance of voting to protect and advance their priorities.
