Pelicans Suspend Zion Williamson For Repeated Tardiness

Zion Williamson has been suspended by the New Orleans Pelicans for one game due to several instances of tardiness.

Having been late to multiple practices this season, New Orleans decided to suspend him after being late for the team flight to Philadelphia.

New Orleans plays the Sixers Friday night.

Williamson, Pelicans Release Statements

The suspension must have been well discussed, as both executive vice president David Griffin and Zion Williamson released statements that accompanied the penalty.

David Griffin:

“This one game suspension is a result of failing to meet our team standards. His dedication to this organization is of paramount significance to us and to him. He has taken accountability for his actions and reaffirmed that commitment to the team today. I’m confident he will continue to evolve positively on and off the floor.”

Zion Williamson:

“I take full responsibility for this suspension. I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to Mrs. Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”

Furthermore, head coach Willie Green spoke pre-game and also acknowledged the organization has dealt with the matter and is ready to move forward.

“He apologized for his mistake, he’s taken accountability,” Green said. “Now, we move forward and get ready for tonight’s game.”

Williamson’s Career Taking Unfortunate Turn

Once a talent with so much promise drafted first overall in 2019, things are starting to look bleak for Williamson.

In his sixth season, Williamson has played more than 30 games just twice. After serving his suspension, he will have played in just seven of New Orleans’ 39 games this season.

That makes his best-case scenario this year a 50-game season.

With all the stipulations in his contract that can make his money non-guaranteed, these instances exhibiting a lack of professionalism will only further harm his reputation.

In the seven games Williamson has played this season, he’s averaging 22.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, one steal and 1.1 blocks.

Returning from a two-month layoff due to a hamstring injury, Williamson had 22 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in 28 minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.
