Pedro Porro unable to back up big talk as he fades back into Pep Guardiola’s Man City loan army

Manchester City all but booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last night, as they beat Sporting CP 5-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

City's 2,500 travelling supporters left Lisbon's Estadio Jose Alvalade elated after witnessing wonder-strikes from Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling.

While Pep Guardiola lamented his side's sloppiness on the ball in the first-half, he and his players will no-doubt be delighted with the scoreline.

However, there is one man associated with City who isn't likely to be in the best of moods today.

Sporting wing-back Pedro Porro is on loan at the Portuguese giants from City and, with speculation concerning a big summer move ramping up in recent months, things did not pan out exactly as he would have liked.

Reports in recent months have suggested that Real Madrid could make a permanent move for the 22-year-old, with Sporting reportedly unable to activate the £7m purchase option in the loan deal.

Some have speculated whether City might be interested in bringing him back next season to act as cover for Kyle Walker. However, Guardiola's spikey response to a question about Porro before the game against Sporting seemed to pour cold water on any potential reunion.

"I know him perfectly, but we have 250 loan players and I cannot speak with 250 loan players," Pep said, with Porro's previously brash claims that the City boss probably didn't know the club signed him, clearly at the forefront of his mind.

"I don't have time. I'm happy it's going well [for him at Sporting]."

So, how did Porro fare against a rampant City side?

Of course, playing as a member of a back five and conceding five goals is not a great look, but Porro could not be individually blamed for any of City's goals.

In fact, in a frantic first-half that saw Sporting continue to attack City despite conceding four goals at the other end, he was arguably their best player.

On a couple of occasions, the wing-back got the better of City left-back Joao Cancelo, using his sharp footwork and acceleration to get himself into dangerous positions.

During his 82-minute outing, Porro made four crosses and completed three of the six dribbles he attempted - not bad considering he was attacking the side of the pitch covered by Cancelo, Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne.

Most of Sporting's promising moves went through him, perhaps explaining why he was the joint most-fouled home player, drawing four free-kicks. Defensively, he was fairly solid too, winning nine of the 13 duels that he contested.

However, after a promising first-half (that seems strange to say given that his side conceded four goals) Porro's influence waned during the second period. After a frantic first-half City display that lacked the usual control they exude, the Blues killed the contest in and shut off any opportunities for the hosts to counter.

Porro will likely play for a different team next season, but don't expect that to be City. Despite some promising moments, being involved in a 5-0 defeat will not have provided enough heat to thaw Guardiola's pre-match frostiness.
