Pedro Porro first words on Tottenham transfer after sealing deadline day Sporting loan move

Pedro Porro officially became a Tottenham player 10 minutes before the end of the January transfer window, despite the club chasing his signature for the entire month. Upon signing, the 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half year contract in north London and joins on an initial loan deal with Spurs having an obligation to buy him as part of the agreement in a deal worth 45m (£39.5m).

The release clause appeared to be the main reason a move was delayed and despite it seeming an agreement had been reached, Sporting reneged a significant financial term which meant the move very nearly collapsed at the last minute. Crucial meetings took place on January 30 and both clubs were then able to agree on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy.

football.london understands the deal was structured as a loan to fit in with Sporting's financial commitments. The Portuguese club need it to show in the next financial year, so the two clubs found a solution to still be able to sign the player now rather than wait until the summer.

Porro therefore follows Arnaut Danjuma through the door at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will wear the number 23 shirt. Despite the chaos that ensued surrounding his proposed transfer to Tottenham, Porro admitted it was great to finally seal a move and subsequently fulfil a dream.

“I feel great about the move. I really wanted to come here. It’s unique opportunity for me and I hope everything goes well," he said to SPURSPLAY. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid, to play in the Premier League. I hope that it comes true, goes well this Sunday, and that we pick up the win.”

When asked what he can bring to the team and what he was looking forward to most following his move, the wingback said: “Above all, it’s the atmosphere in the stadium and the supporters. The red-hot atmosphere that I felt when I came here in the Champions League, I was really impressed by it.

“I can bring a lot of character and personality to this team,” he added. “Above all, my desire and will to win. I’ve also managed to watch quite a few league games this season, I’ve been following our games too, and in this case, I can say that now! So, yes, I can provide character, desire, and a great attitude.”

Up next for Tottenham in the Premier League is a visit from the Premier League champions and Porro's former team, Manchester City. Despite the task in front of Spurs, Porro struggled to hide his excitement for the season which starts for him on Sunday

“We have to start well, get on a winning run, and that hopefully begins on Sunday. For the moment, as I said, the main thing is to start well and to go on a winning run. I’m really up for it and can’t wait to get started.”
