GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit have now launched an investigation, and are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the collision - or have footage - to come forward.

The northbound carriageway of the motorway remained sealed off for a number of hours on Tuesday evening to allow police to carry out their investigation work.

Drivers were subject to major delays and diversions had to be put in place - as the scale of the incident meant that both sides of the motorway had to be closed for some time.

Eyewitnesses described seeing a huge emergency response, with several police cars and other emergency vehicles spotted racing to the scene.

In a statement, GMP said: "GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit appeal for information following a road traffic collision on the Northbound carriageway of the M66.
