Pedestrian killed on M57 'fell from motorway footbridge' before being hit by car

A pedestrian who was killed on the M57 reportedly fell from a motorway footbridge before being hit by a car.

Emergency services were called to the motorway, close to Switch Island, shortly after 6pm on Friday November 1 to reports of a collision.

Road closures were quickly put in place by police who stated that a male pedestrian had been knocked down.

As traffic started to build in the area after the rush hour crash police posted an update on their Twitter account to state that the pedestrian had sadly died at the scene.

The ECHO now understands that the pedestrian, a 55-year-old man, fell from an overhead footbridge onto the motorway before being hit by a car.

Although this has not been confirmed by police, witnesses from the scene reported the circumstances.

At the time, Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are on the scene of a serious road traffic collision on the M57 today, Friday 1 November.

"At around 6.15pm, reports were received of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle near to the northbound junction for Switch Island.

"Officers are on the scene as we look to establish the full circumstances.

"A road closure will be in place both northbound and southbound between Junction 6 for Kirkby and Junction 7 for Switch Island for a considerable time and road users are asked to avoid the area while the investigation is carried out.

"Further updates will be issued when appropriate.

"Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 843."

The death is not being treated as suspicious and Merseyside Police have passed a file to the coroner.

Hundreds of tributes have poured in for the man and then emergency services who dealt with the incident as quickly and professionally as possible.
