Two teenagers have been arrested after a man was stabbed to death in Peckham Rye.

A 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy are being held on suspicion of stabbing Kalabe Legesse on December 30. They were arrested on Thursday and remain in custody at a police station in south London.

The 29-year-old victim died at the scene in Peckham Rye Park and Common after emergency services were called out around 8.20pm. He was said to be “minding his own business” at the park’s cafe off Strakers Road. Two suspects were later seen pedaling bikes away from the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “Kalabe’s family and friends have been left devastated by his death, which occurred after a brutal and senseless attack when he was simply sitting in the park, minding his own business.”

The Metropolitan Police said a post-mortem examination held on December 31 found the cause of death to be a haemorrhage and a stab wound to the heart.

“His next of kin have been informed of the arrests and continue to be supported by specialist officers,” a statement added.

A candlelight vigil took place at the spot Mr Kalebe was ambushed on January 6, exactly one week on from his death.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about what happened, is asked to call 101 with the reference 6165/30DEC22.
