Pearson casts Bristol City fitness doubt ahead of Blackpool and reiterates transfer message

Andi Weimann is a doubt for Saturday's trip to Blackpool after picking up a knock during the week, as Nigel Pearson has reiterated the need to bolster his squad.

The Austrian travelled with the senior squad as Bristol City booked their spot in the Carabao Cup third round with a victory over Wycombe but watched on from the stands alongside Joe Williams and the suspended Mark Sykes.

His involvement was in doubt following a training video posted by the club online on Tuesday where he was absent from the drills that included Antoine Semenyo and Sol Bamba.

Nigel Pearson didn't give much away when asked about Weimann's fitness but did suggest it will be a race against time to have him back in the side to take on Michael Appleton's team.

"He’s rested," Pearson said. "He’s got a knock which we’re just hoping will be okay for the weekend." If he misses out, the City manager will have options to play Alex Scott in the No10 role or opt for a flat three in midfield.

Sykes remains suspended for one more match but Pearson could opt for three strikers with Tommy Conway playing behind a front pairing as he did away at Wigan. Although that would seem unlikely with City playing away from home and the manager likely to prefer taking a more cautious approach.

Although City have been boosted with the return of both Antoine Semenyo and Matty James who both made their return to action last night.

Semenyo came on for the final 20 minutes of the contest and scored City's third as he made his first appearance of the season while Matty James was also a second half substitute following a calf injury picked up following the defeat at Hull on the opening day.

Pearson added: "It’s a tight period of games, the games are relentless at the moment it’s good that when you look over there you’ve got people like Zak (Vyner), Syksey who’s suspended, and Jay (Dasilva), Rob Atkinson they’ve all played a lot of games and even Alex Scott because of his summer.

"They’ve all played a lot of games so it’s good to be able to give pitch time to other players because they need that as well.”

The City manager ironically laughed when he was asked whether he was happy with the depth of his squad with transfer deadline day looming in a week's time. He further reiterated the message that he wants to strengthen areas but doesn't have the resources at his disposal to do so.

"That’s a bit of a laugh. We don’t have depth in the squad at all, they’ve made nine changes, they made more than us," he added. "We’ve got areas that we need to strengthen but we’re not really in a position which we can do that.

"We are having to make other adjustments and that is to find a way of playing that suits our squad and make it so we’re not tinkering with the formation or the detail, I think that makes it easier for the players coming in to understand what’s required.”
