Pearl Jam and Stereophonics BST Hyde Park review: Belting sets in the baking afternoon sun

As band intros go, Pearl Jam's arrival on Hyde Park's main stage to The Beatles All You Need Is Love was unexpected.

Frontman Eddie Vedder came to the front making the heart symbol with his hands and you were wondering just what kind of set the band were going to perform.

But it hit the spot with the crowd allowing them to warm up their voices with the chorus before normal service was resumed as the band kicked off with Corduroy.

What followed was a two and a half hour set of songs spanning more than three decades including Why Go, Black, Porch, Do The Evolution and Faithful.

Mid-set Vedder stops the gig after noticing a "situation" in the crowd. A fan needing some help and water and like Moses he gets them to part to make way for first aiders and security.

He thanks the crowd who he calls "an amazing bunch of humans" and then it's back to the music.

The band cover Neil Young's Throw Your Hatred Down with power and emotion and before starting it Eddie speaks of his anger about America's gun laws.

"There are so many f*****g headstones in the States", he says.

"We’re going to run out of f*****g stone."

With his arms in the air he sings 'throw your weapons down' and perhaps the band's earlier Beatles intro now has more of a poignant meaning.

The Stereophonics supported Pearl Jam on the Saturday (Redferns)

The Seattle group wrapped the night up with Alive, Yellow Ledbetter and a cover of The Who's Baba O'Riley.

Earlier The Stereophonics had played a belting set in the baking afternoon sun.

Cold beers, sun and Kelly Jones' brilliant voice were the perfect ingredients for a singalong in the park.

Kelly spoke of his honour at sharing the stage with Pearl Jam before telling the crowd that time was of the essence.

"We’ve got 12 albums and 20 years but we’ve only got an hour and a bit, so we’d better f*****g get on with it!"

And that they did. Cramming in 15 songs including The Bartender and The Thief, I Wanna Get Lost With You, A Thousand Trees, Maybe Tomorrow, and Have a Nice Day.

Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran (Redferns)

During the set Kelly stripped things right back with a fantastic version of Pick A Part That's New on the ukelele before picking the tempo up for a fantastic finish with Just Looking and Dakota.

Just 24 hours later and it was the turn of Nile Rodgers and Chic to whip the crowd up into a frenzy with hit after hit of feelgood songs allowing everyone to get Lost In Music!

Everybody Dance, I’m Coming Out, Upside Down, He’s the Greatest Dancer and We Are Family brought the party vibe to Hyde Park before Sunday night headliners Duran Duran brought the curtain down on the three week American Express Presents BST gigs with hits including The Wild Boys, A View To A Kill, Hungry Like The Wolf, Ordinary World, Planet Earth, Girls on Film, Save a Prayer and Rio.
