Peaky Blinders star Karl Shiels laid to rest in Dublin funeral after sudden death

Tragic Karl Shiels' funeral has taken place in his home town of Dublin as friends and family came out to remember the Peaky Blinders and Batman Begins star.

It is believed the 47-year-old died in his sleep on Sunday, although exact details and the results of a coroner's report are yet to be announced.

He was reportedly in the weeks leading up to his death.

The life of the actor, who starred as Robbie Quinn in his final role in Fair City, was celebrated as he was laid to rest.

Co-stars included Bryan Murray, Aisling O'Neill and Rebecca Grimes all attended the service.

Pauline McGlynn, who starred in Father Ted, was also there to pay her respects.

Confirming the news of his death in a statement on Monday, his agent Lisa Richard said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our client and friend Karl Shiels.

“Karl was a uniquely talented individual, simultaneously intense, light-hearted, funny, sharp-witted, outspoken and intensely powerful as an actor, director and artistic director of the Theatre Upstairs – where he was such a support and mentor for young writers, actors and directors – and of his own company Semper Fi before that.

His characters were usually shady - and fans loved his edgy vibe (STRICT EMBARGO: TV Listings Magazines Monday 3rd August 2015; Weekly newspapers Monday 3rd August 2015 and Daily Newspapers and Websites Saturday 8th August 2015)

“Karl was a remarkable force in Irish theatre and hugely loved and respected by all who worked with him.

“Our hearts are broken but today our thoughts are with his partner Laura and his family, his children and their mother Dearbhla and his many close friends among whom we count ourselves lucky to have been for so many years.”

His agent and Fair City reps have refused to commented on reports which suggested the star had been ‘falling asleep on set’ in the days preceding his death.

Former Fair City star Aoibhin Garrihy paid tribute to her late co-star, saying: “It’s hard to believe, it’s just awful.”

She told the Irish Daily Mirror: “My whole Facebook page, Instagram page, Twitter page is just flooded and it is just a testament to the man.

“He was a mentor to so many and what really struck a chord to me is that so many young actors and old actors.

"Karl gave me a chance when nobody else would’ by providing a platform at The Theatre Upstairs and yeah he was a mentor and a lovely guy.”
