PDC Darts: Gerwyn Price scalp the biggest win of Ross Montgomery's career as he mounts stunning comeback in 'strange' win

Darts star Ross 'The Boss' Montgomery claimed the biggest win of his career last week after stunning world number one Gerwyn Price with an incredible comeback on the PDC Tour.

The East Kilbride thrower looked down and out in the second round of the 'Players' Championship 23' event with 'The Iceman' holding a seemingly unassailable 5-1 lead in the best of 13 legs clash.

But Montgomery, ranked 122 in the rankings, roared back to take the match 6-5 as the Welshman uncharacteristically crumbled.

To put the result in greater context, Price has racked up £1.2m in prizemoney this season while Montgomery has just £9,000 to his name.

The Boss, who went on to lose to Danny Baggish 6-5 in the last 32, is happy to take the scalp but admits it's a game he never should have won, and he feels for Price.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "It's the biggest win of my career but I don't want to glorify it too much because, watching Gerwyn when he was playing, he was so keen to finish the game off he ended up trying too hard.

"It was strange circumstances but I hit the doubles when I had to, so I'll take it and move on.

"He just kept missing everything. I just tried to stand back, relax, get another leg, get another leg just to try and make it respectable.

"I just kept pegging him back and it seemed the harder Gerwyn tried, the more he was missing.

"The most nerve-wracking thing for me was at 5-5 and I had a 41 checkout.

"I just had to make sure I hit a big one and then got my shot at the double.

"I felt for Gerwyn because I've been in that position myself many times over the years, where you can't finish a game off.

"I was playing okay, but Gerwyn was tremendous for those first six legs.

"Then all of a sudden the wheels fell off for him.

"Gerwyn was a perfect gentleman after the defeat, but I can imagine how he feels.

"He'll be raging.

"It should have been 6-1 to Gerwyn.

"The game was his for the taking, but that's just darts when you are missing by millimetres.

"In the next game against Danny Jansen I was missing the doubles and lost the match, so that's how it goes.

"Next time I draw Gerwyn, I've got a good idea what will happen!"

Montgomery is in his debut year on the tour, having won his playing privileges last winter.

He has yet to win three matches on the bounce in a ranking event and admits his hopes of reaching the World Championships at Alexandra Palace at the turn of the year look very unlikely.

He added: "The season is going okay. I'm picking up some money, but not really climbing up the rankings.

"There's a couple of months left of this tour so I'll just keep plodding on.

"I need to try and get some more wins on the board.

"The way things are going I don't think I'll make it to the Ally Pally for the world championships, but we'll see what happens."
