A serving Metropolitan Police officer has appeared in court charged with assaulting a man who was arrested after being mistaken for a suspect.
Pc Jonathan Marsh, 33, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with assault by beating, where he pleaded not guilty.
Pc Marsh, attached to East Area Command Unit, was called to an incident of criminal damage on Atlanta Boulevard, Romford, east London, on November 13 2022.
He allegedly used force to arrest a man who he wrongly thought to be the suspect, Met Police said.
The man was later de-arrested at the scene.
Marsh, of Ferrymead, Canvey Island, Essex, was charged following an investigation by watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
He is currently on restricted duties.
Marsh was given unconditional bail and a trial date was set for November 6 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
