Paul Toole wins NSW Nationals leadership vote, becomes new Deputy Premier

New Deputy Premier hopes to get on with business as usual

Paul Toole says it is a "real honour" to be voted in to replace John Barilaro as the NSW Nationals leader and state's Deputy Premier.

The Member for Bathurst and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads has served as the National's Deputy leader for three years.

Mr Toole defeated Water Minister Melinda Pavey in a secret ballot as NSW Parliament house on Macquarie Street this morning.

Bronnie Taylor was also appointed as the National deputy leader.

Ms Taylor is currently the Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women and lives in the electorate of Monaro and sits in the state's upper house..

Nationals Whip Steph Cooke confirmed the 15-3 count and the appointments this morning.

Mr Toole said after leaving the party room meeting this morning that he was "looking forward to getting back to work".

“This, to me, is a real honour, but I'm not focusing on it because I want to make sure we focus on the people of this state,” he said.

Mr Toole said he and new Premier Dominic Perrottet would prioritise a regional tour when Parliament ended next fortnight.

"He wants to make sure we do a regional tour together," Mr Toole added.

Newly-appointed deputy leader Ms Taylor also spoke of her commitment to regional NSW, saying she'll never forget her beginnings as a Cooma cancer nurse.

"I feel very humbled to have the support of my colleagues today," she said.

"I told them today that my pledge will be that I serve our leader and I serve our party with integrity, with enthusiasm, and with honesty.

Mr Toole was sworn-in as Deputy Premier this afternoon in a ceremony at Government House in Sydney.

His appointment follows a major shake-up in Macquarie Street and several high-profile resignations over the past six days.

The first was Premier Gladys Berejiklian's who stepped down from the state's top job on Friday and was replaced by Mr Perrottet yesterday.

Her departure was followed by Transport Minister Andrew Constance announcing his exit from state politics to run at the next federal election.

On Monday, Mr Toole's predecessor Mr Barilaro also announced he was leaving politics after admitting public life had "taken a toll".

Mr Perrottet said he welcomed the appointments of Mr Toole and Ms Taylor.

"In electing Paul Toole to lead their party, the NSW Nationals have sent a strong signal that the NSW Liberals and Nationals will continue to build a better future for the bush with energy and optimism," Mr Perrottet said.

"Paul is a fighter and a pragmatist who has a strong track-record of delivering for regional and rural NSW.

"In Bronnie the NSW Nationals have elected the first female deputy leader of the party in more than 100 years, and she will continue to be a voice for progress within the government."

Before entering Parliament in 2011, Mr Toole worked as a primary school teacher for almost 20 years.

He was elected to Bathurst Regional Council in 2005 and became Mayor two years later.

The new leaders' first task will be the reopening of NSW, with COVID-19 restrictions set to ease on October 11.

"I think it's important that we focus on people, that we focus on communities, and we make sure that we support businesses re-opening their doors," Mr Toole told the ABC earlier this morning.
