Paul Scholes got his scathing criticism over Manchester United winger Antony spot on during the embarrassing reverse at the hands of Manchester City at the weekend.
The Red Devils slumped to a humiliating 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium having found themselves trailing 4-0 at half-time and 6-1 in the second half before a late brace from Anthony Martial restored at least some pride. Brazilian wideman Antony also managed to get on the scoresheet with a wonderful effort from distance. The strike was his second for the club since becoming United’s second-most expensive signing in a summer transfer from Dutch giants Ajax.
That was not enough to satisfy Scholes, though, who criticised the 22-year-old for his defensive work throughout the game.
Taking to Instagram on Monday morning, the former midfielder posted a picture of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. Along with the image, Scholes added the caption "Anyone remember when wingers used to help their fullbacks?"
That post appeared to be a subtle dig at Antony - and attacking colleague Jadon Sancho - for not providing defensive assistance to Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia. That was certainly to the detriment of the team, with both full-backs enduring torrid afternoons against City during which they received bookings.
In the wake of his criticism, Scholes has been more than vindicated, with reports suggesting that Antony ignored boss Erik ten Hag ahead of the game. The Brazilian was tasked with more defensive responsibility but did not meet that remit as United suffered their heavy defeat.

Scholes' comments were echoed by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who was highly critical of Antony and Sancho for their lack of defensive contribution.
He said: "I had the impression that Man United have some work to do to defend on crosses from their central defenders and from their midfielders. What is for me unbelievable in the first half is that Man United has defended so badly on the flanks.
"From the first minute, Dalot got a yellow card, and Sancho and Antony did not contribute defensively. They were, in the whole half, flooded on the flanks and they were always in trouble."
Speaking after the game, United boss Ten Hag pulled no punches and stated that the performance of his side was “unacceptable”.
He added: "As a team and as individuals, we will criticise each other tomorrow and then we will learn the lessons. We have to learn from these mistakes and in the next game, we have to do better."
Antony might have a chance to get back in the Dutchman’s good books as United take on Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
